MISDIAGNOSIS OF SERIOUS CHILDHOOD ILLNESSES

Meningitis

The most common form of meningitis is the inflammation of the membranes of the spinal cord or brain.  Symptoms - especially in infants - include fever, sore neck and nausea.  Meningitis is caused by bacteria, viruses or other organisms.  In order to diagnosis meningitis, a spinal tap should be performed. Early diagnosis of meningitis is critical.  If this infection goes untreated, it could lead to death, brain injury including cerebral palsy, blindness and other catastrophic injuries.  Treatment may include antibiotics and hospitalization.  A high fever in a newborn is very serious and should be evaluated promptly and thoroughly.

Group B Strep
There are published and well accepted standards for doctors who treat pregnant women - screening for Group B Strep during pregnancy, and administering antibiotics before delivery.  In some cases where these standards are not followed, the result is death, blindness, and/or serious brain injury to the baby.

If your baby was born with Group B Strep and suffered serious complications, you should act immediately.

Failure to Diagnose Other Serious Childhood Illnesses
For the past 25 years, our advocates have represented many children or families of children who have had serious childhood illnesses that were improperly diagnosed or treated.  These included diabetes, gastrointestinal problems, cancer, and other similar serious illnesses.
